BasketShop Gallery is pleased to present the paintings of Linling Lu for her first show in Cincinnati. For over a decade, Lu has been compiling a body of mandala paintings titled 100 Melodies of Solitude. By using the circle as a substructure, she is freed to explore the synesthetic properties of colors, often referring to the pieces as musical scores. Linling Lu bridges cultural influences between her Traditional Chinese Garden studies and a profound attraction to American Minimalist painting. Now residing in Baltimore, Maryland and frequently displaying her work with Hemphill Fine Arts, Washington DC, Lu draws a direct lineage from the mid-century Washington Color School started by renowned artists such as Kenneth Noland, Morris Louis, Alma Thomas and others. For her show at BasketShop, Lu will also be exhibiting recent sculptures that have a direct correlation to another historic D.C. Colorist, Anne Truitt. Linling Lu was born in 1983 in Guizhou Province, China. In 2005 she received a bachelor's degree in Landscape Architecture from Beijing Forestry University. Lu came to the United States in 2006 to attend Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), Baltimore, MD, received a BFA in painting in 2008 and an MFA from the Hoffberger School of Painting, MICA in 2011. Her work is included in private and public collections nationally and internationally and the permanent collection of the US Embassy in Beijing.
