BasketShop is excited to present the work of Jesse Ly: Image Interference, for his first solo show and part of the 2020 FotoFocus Biennial. Jesse recently received his Bachelors from the DAAP program at the University of Cincinnati.

Within the foreground of Jesse Ly’s images lies a transitional experience from presentation to impression. While reckoning with the nuances from what once was and now appears before the viewer, the artist forms compositions of flattened and cropped view, changing perspectives and creating liminal spaces between focus. These adjustments move the individual to understand the view of the image maker and expands the photographic dialog from “what is here,” to “how is it here and why” and then bleeds into more specific concerns of interconnected identity.

SThis work directly addresses facets of relationships, nostalgia, passing moments, racial disparity, melancholy and appreciation. Its deconstruction incites a willingness to transcend and further understand these disparities upon viewing. Ly’s compositions display an array of varying and subversive experiences every person holds and creates differentiation within the subjects. This questioning of photographic complexity extends the conversation of the continual necessity of image making and instigates these pursuits to further understand the illusion of imagery and what directly pulls from reality.
